How's That New Healthy-Food Kick Going?

Pretty good.  Thanks for asking.
So...The whole eating-healthier-because-we-want-to-live thing is still going on here.  I am pretty much buying only fruits and vegetables right now, in the hope that IF YOU'RE HUNGRY ENOUGH, YOU WILL EAT THEM AND NOT CALL DOMINO'S AT 10 PM BECAUSE THERE'S NOTHING IN THE FRIDGE BUT BROCCOLI, NOT EVEN A PIECE OF CHEESE.   Right??

I also stopped drinking coffee (again) a few days ago.

Actually, I didn't.  But we appear to be out of creamer AND cream right now, and coffee for me doesn't exist without some form of cream.  Not milk, either.  That is not the same, so don't be all throwing that out there.  Plus, we're out of milk, or I'm not buying it because it's bad for Shane's cholesterol or something.

That's the best way I know how to diet.  Just quit having that stuff in the fridge, and tah-dah...you can't eat it.  Problem solved.

Today I did make coffee for him, and I stood at the fridge for quite awhile wondering what I could put in a cup for me.  Greek yogurt? Nah, too much honey.  Sour cream?  Maybe.  Bleu cheese dressing?  Come on, it's 8:30 a.m...  Then I found Redi-Whip, another thing I buy about once a decade, so I put that in it.

Don't judge.  I'm having raw cauliflower and almonds for lunch.

Yep. It's all about health around here.

  1. I would've been the one caving into Dominoes. It's SOOOOO HARD!! UGH. I commend you for trying. That's all we can do, right? Try try try.

    1. and try and try and try... But it's definitely possible that I may or may not have actually kept the Domino's mailer-thing in my desk drawer. Just in case.

  2. We're doing the same thing now.

I've been having sauteed mushrooms, tomatoes and spinach on sprouted grain toast for lunch. It's not satisfying.

We're having a potluck at work today, so I get a reprieve, even though I know I'll feel like crap tonite..

    STAY STRONG.

    I want pizza.

    1. I know, right?! I just spent the morning poring over the two vegetarian cookbooks I do own. One is more like "Italian vegetarian", which means--no meat but lots of cheese and bread (no!). The other is Forks over Knives, which is the diet we *need* to do for his cholesterol, but AHMIGASH THAT STUFF DOESN'T LOOK LIKE FUN AT ALL.
      *sigh*

  3. No bread or cheese? That would kill me! I'm not a coffee drinker, but I know what you mean about staring into the fridge and just deciding to order out. We used to do that a lot around here, but financially it's not a wise decision with two small kids, so we've limited ourselves to once a pay period. That means sometimes that we're eating whatever we can come up with or breakfast for dinner. Eggs seem to make it the longest in our house and frozen veggies, but not the fresh fruits or veggies. And when I think about it...our pantry is full of pasta. How is that we always seem to have so much of that laying around, but never any bananas? Best of luck on coming up with some new recipes!

    1. Ah, yes. Eggs. We have 19 hens, so we have TOO MANY EGGS ALL THE TIME FOREVER. There are always hard-boiled eggs, and I love omelets, and then every so often we have eggs for dinner, or I make an angel food cake or something, but wow, it's a lot of them.

Right now there's no bread, except occasional whole-grain (gah) bread or rice pasta (which we do love). I have let us run almost out of cheese, which stinks, but I do love feta and tomatoes.

Basically just avoiding processed foods as much as possible...

  4. Okay, in case my original comment decides to post, I thought I would share this idea with you from another blog that I love. You could make it totally vegetarian if you like or add a little bit of cheese:

    1. Funny-- I had quinoa in my hand yesterday and didn't buy it. I never have, yet. Can't quite bring myself to do it. Baby steps, you know? But those pizza bite pictures definitely make it more tempting...

Tonight I'm leaning towards burgers (real ones) because we have a freezer full of our home-raised organic pork and beef, but I bookmarked that blog for ideas--thanks!!

  5. Oh gosh, don't starve yourself Stef! Though I'm with you about focusing on healthy foods-- I just ate buckwheat. BUCKWHEAT WTF. I bought it as an alternative to the oatmeal I eat every morning but I didn't realize that I couldn't just pour almond milk on top and take it to work with me.... no... you have to heat that shiz otherwise the grains don't swell and they just stay like these tiny little rock seeds that you're spooning out of a glass of milk. Most awkward breakfast ever.

    1. Nah, no one's starving around here, except in the sense of *standing in front of the fridge full of fruit and veggies, saying WHY IS THERE NO PIZZA IN HERE?*

And--Oh, my gosh child! I've never done *that*, but I make buckwheat waffles sometimes, if that helps. ;)

  6. I've been eating Greek yogurt and Triscuits and celery. I chop up the celery into bite sized pieces, place the piece on one cracker and dip it in plain Greek yogurt. I do this because I am a weirdo if anyone asks.

  7. I made a comment but it got eaten so I'm trying again.

I make little open faced sandwiches with Triscuits, Greek yogurt, and celery because I am a weirdo. The first comment was funnier and now I am hungry okay.

    1. Welcome! I think it sounds good, except I think I'm the only adult I know who doesn't like celery. Which I thought made me a weirdo, too...
